 Reception Baseline Assessment (RBA)

The STA 2025 reception baseline assessment: assessment and reporting arrangements (ARA) – GOV.UK sets out the statutory requirements for the RBA and includes:
• changes for the academic year 2025 to 2026 including new requirements for a pupil device as well as an assessor device.
• important dates
• responsibilities
• participation and administration details
• reporting requirements
• legal obligations 

There is a new RBA information video, which provides an overview of the changes and important dates for the academic year 2025 to 2026.

In line with these changes, STA has also updated the RBA assessment framework, which includes information about the assessment’s design and content

On 11th April 2018, the Department for Education confirmed that the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) has been chosen as the supplier to design and deliver the new reception baseline assessment ( RBA).

It will be an activity-based assessment of pupils’ ability in:

They are also exploring whether self-regulation can form part of the assessment.

A nationally representative sample of schools will be selected to trial the assessment in 2018/19 academic year.

Any school with a reception cohort will be able to participate in the large scale voluntary pilot in 2019/20 academic year.
